Vehicle history reports
Ownership chains, MOT trails, mileage records and provenance flags — the public record of every UK-registered vehicle.
A vehicle history report differs from a provenance check in emphasis. A provenance check is the legal and financial backstop: is the car stolen, is there finance against it, has an insurer written it off. A history report is the trail: how many keepers, what the MOT advisories say, whether the mileage moves in a plausible line, whether the vehicle has been off the road for long stretches that don't reconcile with any insurance event.
The brands in this hub serve different angles of that trail. Free Car History and Free Vehicle Info focus on the no-cost summary — make, model, MOT, tax, basic provenance. Full Car History and Complete Vehicle Check return the depth. Vehicle Dossier and Car Past Report wrap the same data in a forensic, audit-ready PDF format suitable for sharing with an insurer, broker or solicitor.
For most second-hand UK purchases, the history report is the second document you read after the V5C. Used well, it's the prompt for the questions you raise with the seller. Used badly, it's a tick-box that gets filed away unread.

/ Common questions
- Does the history show service records?
- No. Service records are held by garages and manufacturers, not by DVLA, and are not part of any vehicle history report. Ask the seller for the service book and look for stamped, dated entries with mileage.
- How far back does the MOT record go?
- Digital MOT records start in 2005 in England, Wales and Scotland. Older tests pre-date the digital register and are not retrievable.
- How should I use the advisory list?
- Read it as a maintenance record. Advisories that recur year after year suggest deferred work; advisories that appear once and disappear suggest the repair was done. The pattern is more informative than any single test.
- Will the report show every owner ever?
- It shows the recorded number of previous keepers and the date each took ownership. It does not return the names or addresses of previous keepers, which are protected under data-protection law.
- Why does the first registration date not match the model year?
- Vehicles are frequently built in one year and registered in the next, and pre-registered stock can sit unsold for months. Registration date is what determines age for valuation, tax and warranty purposes.
