A used EV check has the same provenance, finance and write-off layer as any other vehicle, plus a layer that's unique to electric drivetrains: battery state-of-health, charging history, remaining battery warranty and connector type.
EV Car Check, EV Car Checks and Hybrid Check each return an estimated SoH derived from the manufacturer's diagnostic feed where it's accessible (typically post-2018 vehicles through the OBD port). The figure is an estimate, not a warranty-grade reading; for that, a dealer diagnostic is needed. The same reports include the ratio of DC rapid charging to slower AC charging, which is the single biggest factor in long-term battery wear after age.
For hybrids and plug-in hybrids, the battery and EV-only range matter as much as the engine condition. PHEV batteries typically degrade faster than full-EV batteries because they cycle more frequently between high and low state-of-charge.

/ Common questions
- Could the battery be leased separately?
- On a small number of older UK EVs, yes. The car can be owned outright while the pack remains the finance company's property, and the lease must be transferred formally. Establish which applies before agreeing a price.
- What's CHAdeMO and does it matter?
- An older rapid-charging connector used on some pre-2018 EVs. It's being phased out of UK public networks in favour of CCS. The check returns the recorded connector type so you can judge futureproofing.
- Are EVs more expensive to insure?
- Typically 10-20% higher than equivalent ICE cars, largely because battery damage frequently triggers a write-off where a smaller repair would suffice on a combustion car. Quote cover before completing.
- Are electric cars still tax-free?
- No. Electric vehicles now pay vehicle excise duty and many attract the expensive-car supplement. Company-car benefit-in-kind rates remain comparatively low but are rising on a published schedule, so check current-year figures.
- Will I get the advertised range?
- Rarely in full. WLTP is a laboratory standard, and a shortfall of a fifth or more is common in winter, at motorway speeds and with climate control running. Judge a used EV on the roads you actually drive.
