A vehicle check returns information about the vehicle, not about people. Previous keepers appear only as a count and a sequence of dates; names and addresses are protected and are never returned. Your own search history is held against your account for support and dispute purposes and is not sold on.
Category A means the vehicle must be crushed in its entirety and never re-registered. Category B requires the bodyshell to be destroyed; only mechanical parts may be reused. Category S indicates structural damage that has been professionally repaired. Category N covers non-structural damage repaired to a roadworthy standard. The check returns the recorded category, the year of the entry and, where the insurer has shared it, the recorded damage type.
Alongside insurance categories, the check returns any recorded scrappage or end-of-life notification. A vehicle notified to DVLA as destroyed should not be back on the road under the same identity; if it appears in a listing, treat the advert as a probable ring and do not travel to view it.

A basic free check returns MOT, tax and a stolen marker. A full history check adds outstanding finance, insurance write-off categories, full mileage history with anomaly detection, plate change history and provenance flags. For any purchase over a few thousand pounds, the full check is the relevant one.
Write-off categories are permanent. A finance marker clears when the lender registers the agreement as settled, which can take a few working days after payment, so a recently settled agreement may still show.
Raise it directly with the seller before any money changes hands. A Category N marker is not always a deal-breaker but a seller who denies the marker exists is telling you something separate about the rest of the transaction.
Keep the PDF for at least two years. If a dispute later arises with the seller or with an insurer, the dated report is the primary evidence that the issue was either declared or undeclared at the point of sale.
