MOT
MOT test
Also known as: MOT, Ministry of Transport test
Annual statutory roadworthiness inspection required for most UK vehicles over three years old, set by section 47 of the Road Traffic Act 1988.
The MOT is a roadworthiness inspection administered by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and carried out at approved testing stations. It confirms that, at the moment of test, the vehicle met the minimum statutory standards in the DVSA inspection manual.
An MOT pass is not a mechanical warranty. It does not certify that the vehicle is in good condition or that hidden faults are absent. Responsibility for the roadworthiness of the vehicle remains with the driver and registered keeper every time it is used on the road.
