The MOT history database (check-mot.service.gov.uk) is the single best free defence against mileage fraud. The mileage at each test is recorded and any gap or reversal in the sequence is visible.
Combined with advisories repeated across consecutive years, the MOT history is often more informative about a used car than the seller's description.
