Fraud Red Flag
Mileage discrepancy
A drop or implausible gap in the recorded mileage between MOT tests. Visible free on the DVSA MOT history service.
A mileage discrepancy is not always fraud — a swapped instrument cluster after an accident, or a tester typing the wrong figure, can create a one-off anomaly. A repeating pattern, or a sudden drop just before a sale, almost always is.
Vehicle data providers cross-reference MOT readings with service records and finance records; a flagged discrepancy on a paid check is a strong reason to walk away unless the seller can produce documented evidence of the cause.
