Looking for a car history check alternative

The established brands are not the only route to a provenance check. Here is what genuinely changes when you use an independent provider — and what does not.

What does not change

The registers behind a UK vehicle check are shared infrastructure. DVLA holds vehicle identity and tax status, DVSA holds MOT history, the insurance industry write-off register holds total-loss records, and finance and stolen-vehicle data comes through contracted providers. A smaller brand querying the same registers is not working from worse data.

Coverage varies by record type for everyone. No UK provider — established or independent — holds a complete picture of every vehicle on the road, and none of us can query the Police National Computer directly; only UK police forces have that access.

What does change

Price structure, presentation and honesty about gaps. We publish single-report prices with no voucher pack, write findings as a narrative rather than a raw data dump, and record the coverage state behind every result so an unverified field is never dressed up as a pass.

Five questions to ask any provider

Does the price include outstanding finance?
Finance is the record most likely to cost a buyer real money, and it is the one most often sold as an add-on. Ours is included from the Gold tier at £2.99.
What happens when a register does not respond?
A missing answer is not a clear answer. Our reports label a field as checked and clear, checked with a marker, or not returned — they never present an unverified field as clear.
Is the price a single purchase or a voucher pack?
Advertised low prices are frequently the per-report cost inside a multi-report bundle. Every price we publish is what one report costs.
Can you see the format before paying?
A published sample report tells you what you are buying. Ours is public and mirrors the real structure with fictional data.
What is the guarantee actually promising?
Headline guarantee figures describe liability cover under conditions, not data completeness. Read the conditions rather than the number.
