For vehicles over £10,000, ex-fleet stock, anything advertised as 'just imported' or any car where the registered address sits a long way from the listing, treat a summary check as a starting point rather than the verdict. a full vehicle history report, a pre-purchase inspection at the seller's address and a finance settlement letter where applicable are the three layers that catch the cases a quick lookup will not.
Short keeper tenures, a business address in the keeper sequence or a cluster of high-mileage years typically indicate ex-fleet, ex-lease or ex-rental use. None of that is a defect — fleet cars are often better maintained than private ones — but it should be reflected in the price, and a seller presenting an ex-rental car as one careful owner is misdescribing it.
Category A means the vehicle must be crushed in its entirety and never re-registered. Category B requires the bodyshell to be destroyed; only mechanical parts may be reused. Category S indicates structural damage that has been professionally repaired. Category N covers non-structural damage repaired to a roadworthy standard. The check returns the recorded category, the year of the entry and, where the insurer has shared it, the recorded damage type.

DVLA records are refreshed every 6 hours. MIAFTR and contracted stolen-vehicle data are requested at lookup. Finance registers are updated by participating lenders as agreements are opened, settled or transferred.
Keep the PDF for at least two years. If a dispute later arises with the seller or with an insurer, the dated report is the primary evidence that the issue was either declared or undeclared at the point of sale.
It is worth doing before selling. You see exactly what a buyer will see, and any historic marker from a previous owner can be disclosed in the advert with the paperwork ready rather than discovered on the driveway.
Write-off categories are permanent. A finance marker clears when the lender registers the agreement as settled, which can take a few working days after payment, so a recently settled agreement may still show.
