Inspection Check

Shock absorber bounce test

A worn shock absorber lets the car oscillate more than once after a firm push down on the corner. The MOT uses visual leak and play tests.

A working damper should allow no more than one rebound. The MOT does not require a bounce test; the tester inspects for fluid leaks and abnormal play, and a Major defect is recorded for a significantly leaking unit.

Worn dampers increase stopping distances measurably in published TRL research — typically by several metres at 50mph in the wet.
