Fraud Red Flag
Fake-ID hire fraud
Use of forged photo ID and a short-term rental address to take possession of hired vehicles, which are then disposed of abroad.
The fraudster rents a residential address for one or two months under a forged identity, then uses that address as proof of residence to hire long-term lease or rental vehicles. By the time the rental company traces non-return, the vehicle has typically been shipped out of the country.
Industry defences include licence checks against the DVLA, proof-of-funds verification, and short cooling-off periods on high-value rentals.
